We are working on building independence during our literacy time. Students will work on words, writing, reading to self and listening to stories while I pull small groups for individualized reading instruction.
We have been working on talking about characters, events and the setting in our stories. Each of our stories gave us an opportunity to talk about all of these elements as we work on retelling the story.
Below you will find a few links for you to check out. Storyline and Tumblebooks will read to your child. Starfall and ABCYa have fun games and activities to play online.
Writing
We are revisiting non-fiction writing. For kindergarten students we will be writing about something that we know at least three details about. As an example; kindergarten kids know a lot about things that interest them. Students are writing about everything from Legos to lions. Talk to your student and ask them what they will writing about. Help them to find facts about the thing that interests them.
Writers in kindergarten this time of year will have a strong picture (writing plan) with details. They will have beginning and ending sounds with many middle sounds represented in their words. We are now starting to put spaces between our words more consistently and adding punctuation marks.
